MOUNTAIN CLIMBING | Mount Kilimanjaro

SHIRA ROUTE 8 DAYS.

A longer, challenging and scenic route on Kilimanjaro. This is a less popular as the trach leading to Shira hut is a longer one and not in every good condition.On the acclimatization day at Shira ,one can either stay at Shira Hut taking short walks in the area or depending on the weather condition,

Trek along the edge of the Shira Plateau to the Shira cathedral & Shira needle. This takes about 7-8hrs return

Day 1 - Lemosho/Forest Camp
Depart towards West Kilimanjaro region. Once arrived in the small village of Boma N'gombe, we branch off towards Sanya Juu. In Londorossi gate, we meet the team of guides and porters, then start our hike via Lemosho. Trek through a relatively dry forest (compared to the more humid slopes of Machame and Umbwe). We set up camp at Mti Mkubwa (the big tree ], night at Forest Camp (2900 m).

Day 2 - Forest Camp/Shira Camp 1
We are slowly leaving the forest behind to enter a grass savannah, volcanic rocks, heather and falling lichen. We will meet the first signs of the afro-alpine flora, above 3400 m, with a few groundsels. We reach the Shira Plateau towards the end of the day, with a fantastic view of the breach and the western slopes of Kibo Mount. Night at Shira Camp (3610 m).

Day 3 - Shira Camp 1 – shira 2

Day allocated to the exploration of the Shira Plateau ; we cross the plateau, and depending on the group's fitness, may go until the needles and the cathedral. We do not climb much during this day, which contributes to a good acclimatisation. Night at shira Camp (3800 m).

Day 4 – Shira Camp - 2 Moir hut
We now leave the Shira camp site, heading to Moir camp. We set camp at Moir camp for acclimatization. Then dinner and overnight in Moir camp.

Day 5 - Arrow Glacier Camp
4 hours walk are required to reach Arrow Glacier Camp at 4800m. We are leaving from Lava Tower to arrow glacier camp. Ahead of us rises the Western Breach, that goes all the way inside the crater. Dinner and overnight at arrow glacier.

Day 6 - Arrow Glacier Camp/Crater Camp
Depart before sunrise and after a snack. The temperatures are still cold. It is not until later on that they go above 0°C. We make our way through rocky bars, a few places where you will need to climb with your hands. The slope is steep. After 4 to 5 hours hike, we reach the edge of the crater and the Furtwangler glacier. We set up camp inside the crater at 5800m altitude. Rest and for those who want, a part of the afternoon will be reserved for discovering the crater, eruption cones, northern glaciers.

Day 7: Early at 4:00 am after tea with biscuits depart to uhuru peak for a sunrise then descend to Barafu for a breakfast before proceed to mweka camp to spend a last night.Dinner and overnight at Mweka camp.

Day 8: After breakfast at 8:00 am descend further down to mweka gate where you will be picked back to the hotel booked in town.
